Frances – Everyone has heard about it but nobody can get in. An amazing small casual neighborhood restaurant in the Castro owned and run by the great chef Melissa Perello. Book way in advance or try your luck by getting there at 530 for a seat at the bar. Melissa does californian comfort food and everything on the small daily changing menu is great. She has won numerous awards and a michelin star every year. Well worth the advance planning…

Baked clams – chanterelle, brussels sprouts, bacon, kale

Applewood smoked bacon beignets – maple chive creme fraise

Smoked eggplant and fennel dip – nigella seed lavash crackers

Red trout – romanesco, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, caper, brown butter

Sonoma duck breast – baby kale, squash, lady apple, cipollini onion

Five dot ranch bevette steak – chanterelle mushrooms, caramelized sunchoke, persillade

Chocolate torte and pecan pie – rum caramel and brown butter pecan ice cream

The famous lumberjack cake – rome beauty apple, medjoot date, humphry slocombe maple walnut ice cream
